The following national organizations whose mission is to reduce stroke burden provide a wealth of information, resources and
additional helpful links on their websites.
National Organizations
- American Heart Association -
The mission of the American Heart Association is to reduce disability and death from
cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The American Stroke Association is the division of the
American Heart Association that's solely focused on reducing disability and death from stroke
through research, education, fundraising and advocacy.
These websites offer a variety of
materials and resources for consumers and health professionals.
The health professional resources include:
- Get With the Guidelines-Stroke: This program helps ensure continuous quality improvement of acute stroke treatment and ischemic stroke prevention. It focuses on care team protocols to ensure that patients are treated and discharged appropriately. The program is available for implementation at acute care hospitals nationwide.
- NIH Stroke Scale Training Online: Emergency physicians, neurologists and nurses can take the National Institutes of Health stroke scale training and testing free, and earn continuing education credit at the American Stroke Association’s Web site.
- Primary Stroke Center Certification Program: Primary Stroke Center Certification Program uses the Recommendations for Primary Stroke Centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and ASA statements for stroke.
- Modified Rank Scale (English): This self paced training module comprises an introductory description of the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) to determine functional status.

- National Stroke Association - The National Stroke Association’s mission is to lower the incidence and impact of stroke by developing compelling community outreach programs, calling for continued improvement in the quality of stroke patient care, and educating both healthcare professionals and the general public about stroke. - National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke: The mission of NINDS is to reduce the burden of neurological disease - a burden borne by every age group, by every segment of society, by people all over the world.
- Brain Attack Coalition: The Brain Attack Coalition is a group of professional, voluntary and governmental entities dedicated to reducing the occurrence, disabilities and death associated with stroke. The goal of the Coalition is to strengthen and promote the relationships among its member organizations in order to help stroke patients or those who are at risk for a stroke.
