National Organizations
- American Heart Organization and American Stroke Association -
The mission of the American Heart Association is to reduce disability and death from
cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The American Stroke Association is the division of the
American Heart Association that's solely focused on reducing disability and death from stroke
through research, education, fundraising and advocacy.
These websites offer a variety of
materials and resources for consumers and health professionals.
The health professional resources include:
- Get With the Guidelines-Stroke: This program helps ensure continuous quality improvement of acute stroke treatment and ischemic stroke prevention. It focuses on care team protocols to ensure that patients are treated and discharged appropriately. The program is available for implementation at acute care hospitals nationwide.
- NIH Stroke Scale Training Online: Emergency physicians, neurologists and nurses can take the National Institutes of Health stroke scale training and testing free, and earn continuing education credit at the American Stroke Association’s Web site.
- Primary Stroke Center Certification Program: Primary Stroke Center Certification Program uses the Recommendations for Primary Stroke Centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and ASA statements for stroke.

- Brain Attack Coalition: The Brain Attack Coalition is a group of professional, voluntary and governmental entities dedicated to reducing the occurrence, disabilities and death associated with stroke. The goal of the Coalition is to strengthen and promote the relationships among its member organizations in order to help stroke patients or those who are at risk for a stroke.

- Great Lakes Regional Stroke Network: The mission of the Network is to optimize collaboration and coordination among the Great Lakes Region states to reduce stroke burden and disparities. The network includes: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin The website provides a variety of resources and provides information about stroke related programs and activities in the region.
- Michigan Department of Community Health-Cardiovascular Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity Section: The mission of this section of MDCH is to reate a heart-healthy and stroke-free Michigan by increasing physical activity and healthy eating, reducing health disparities, and preventing and controlling other cardiovascular disease risk factors.
